GIPF funeral claims to be submitted online

THE Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF) has amended its funeral claim submission procedure.

The fund will now accept completed funeral claims submitted electronically via email.

This was announced on Tuesday in a media statement by GIPF client services manager Hilkka Mbako.

Mbako said the fund provides funeral benefits to members and qualifying dependants.

She said these can be categorised under funeral benefits for active members, members on disability, retired members, and qualifying spouses and dependants of active members.

“Funeral benefits are paid upon submission of a completed funeral claim form, accompanied by required certified supporting documents, such as a death certificate, the identity document of the deceased member and claimant, a marriage certificate (if married) and proof of banking particulars of the claimant,” she said.

Mbako said if the deceased was single, two independent family members should declare their relationship to the deceased, and at the same time give a claimant permission to claim the funeral benefit.

“Funeral claims submitted electronically would be acknowledged and processed in the shortest time possible, thereby eliminating the need for the claimant to physically visit the GIPF office.”

Mbako said these claims can either be submitted by a human resource practitioner from a GIPF-participating employer, or the applicable claimant.

“The GIPF requests each claimant to kindly submit the funeral claim with original certified supporting documents within a period of 10 working days,” she said.

Mbako said the amendments to funeral claims are inspired by the fund’s vision of being a leading and model pension fund globally.

The fund aims to deliver the right, fast, and humane quality service to all its stakeholders in an innovative, professional, and respectful manner, she said.
