TILENI MONGUDHI and MATHIAS HAUFIKUUNIVERSITY of Namibia (Unam) pro vice chancellor for academic affairs, Frednard Gideon, through his lawyer Sisa Namandje, has threatened to drag the Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) council to court if it goes ahead with the appointment of Errol Naomab as the university’s vice chancellor.
The Nust council over the weekend announced that Naomab was chosen to succeed Professor Tjama Tjivikua.
Naomab, understands, will be presented with an employment package offer of N$2.3 million per year in the coming days.
Naomab’s appointment caused a public stir after leaked recruitment documents indicated that Gideon scored the highest amongst the shortlisted candidates.
Gideon yesterday confirmed that he approached his legal team to take up the matter.
“I cannot comment further at this stage,” he said.
Namandje confirmed that he wrote to Nust seeking an undertaking that the appointment of Naomab will not go ahead.
“I can confirm that we wrote to the council seeking an explanation as to why my client has been sidelined. They must give us an undertaking before 12h00 today or else we will file an urgent interdict to halt the process,” Namandje told The Namibian yesterday.
The Nust council has denied allegations that it disregarded its own rules when it appointed Naomab, who came second in the interview process.
Naomab was chosen by the council despite scoring lower than Gideon, who was recommended for the position by the committee that conducted the interview process.
