Bank of Namibia governor Johannes !Gawaxab will be leaving the bank a year before his tenure was supposed to end.
In a statement issued by the central bank on Wednesday, !Gawaxab’s last working day will be 31 December.
“The board of directors of the Bank of Namibia hereby announce the departure of Johannes !Gawaxab. His last day of service is the 31st of December 2025,” reads the statement.
!Gawaxab was appointed in 2020 by former president Hage Geingob. He was reappointed in 2022 for a five-year term.
Former president Hage Geingob appointed !Gawaxab as governor of the central bank in June 2020 for an initial 18 months before Geingob confirmed him for a full five-year term on 3 December 2021.
!Gawaxab took office on 1 June to fill the remainder of former central bank governor Iipumbu Shiimi’s term after he was appointed finance minister at the time. Shiimi had served as governor from 2010.
!Gawaxab was recruited from the private sector where he served as executive chairman of private equity firm Eos Capital.
He is also the former managing director of Old Mutual Africa.
