Floorball season comes to an end

THE Elite Floorball Business League successfully completed its third annual league last week.

Emcon, USN, Home Hi-tech, Promex, ATC Namibia and Coleman Transport sponsored mixed-gender teams to participate in the competitive Floorball league.
Floorball is a fast-paced, exciting, safe and low-cost type of indoor hockey.
It is played with a lightweight plastic composite stick, plastic ball, and rules that promote safety and skill.
The league consisted of five teams that played against each other on a round robin basis.
Each Thursday and Friday evening for 30 minutes, a maximum of 12 players per team competed to see who could make it to semi-finals.
Almost each game had a surprising result as the league progressed, and the players became more confident with the rules and game concept.
To make it to semi-finals teams were awarded points and in the end Promex missed out by one point.
Although this team consisted primarily of women, they managed to give their opponents very high-level competition.
The semi-finals became two nail-biting matches, the first between USN/Home Hi-tech and ATC Namibia.
Both teams had veteran players supported by numerous newcomers. After the official game time the score was tied and a compulsory two five-minute overtime halves were added.
It became a battle of the fittest and in the last minute of extra-time, team captain Matthew Jackman managed to score and secure team USN/Home Hi-tech a place in the title match. The final score was 2-1 for USN/Home Hi-tech.
In the game between Coleman Transport and Emcon, both teams were evenly matched, but saw Emcon as the winner with a 2-1 victory at the end.
The finals were highly anticipated and were enthusiastically cheered by supporters.
For third position, the Coleman Transport and ATC Namibia teams provided one of the most memorable matches in the history of the sport.
The game was well-balanced and ended up going into overtime, then the most exciting penalty shots for which each captain had to select five top shooters.
Jaco Schoonbee, captain for Coleman Transport, won the coin toss and chose that captain Monika Ihms’ ATC Namibia team take the first shot. Ten shots were taken with 0:0 result.
This meant that the ‘sudden death’ rule would be played. Each team would again select shooters and the first team to score would win the match. Again 0-0 results.
As ATC Namibia had been chosen at the coin-toss to shoot first, their goalie Wouter Taljaard lined up against goalie Gunnar von Dewitz.
Wouter managed to outplay Gunnar and finally ended the game with the final score ATC Namibia 2:1 Coleman Transport.
Securing ATC Namibia the third position.
In the final match between Emcon and USN/Home Hi-tech, Peter van der Merwe managed to score the first goal for USN/Home Hi-tech. The game was highly competitive, but in the end USN/Home Hi-tech, with the help of Bjoern Baufeldt’s hat-trick confidently won the league with the final score of 4-1 for USN/Home Hi-tech.
