Giraffes relocated from Namibia take their first steps into their new home at Bicuar National Park in south-western Angola. Twelve giraffes captured in Namibia have been relocated to the wildlife reserve in Angola’s Huíla province to establish a founder population of the species, the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) announced on Friday. The relocation was carried out by Angola’s National Institute for Biodiversity and Conservation Areas and the GCF, which is based in Namibia. Native Angolan giraffe populations, which were once widespread across southern Angola, disappeared from much of their historic range following decades of civil conflict, habitat degradation and poaching.
