First phase of Rundu Shopping Mall open

THE first phase of the Rundu Mall has opened. The second phase of the 14 000 square metres Rundu mall is set to open in November this year.

Safland’s leasing director, Mirinda van der Merwe, said tenants trading in this first phase of the development included Shoprite, KFC, JetMart, PEP Home Store, Markhams, Dodo’s and Bears.

“We decided not to have an official opening for phase one of the development, opting to leave this for later this year when the whole centre will be open for business. This, however, did not deter shoppers who arrived in their thousands to support their favourite brands. We are proud of being part of this venture, which – once finished – will be the biggest shopping centre in northern Namibia.”

She added that shoppers not only came from Rundu, but also the balance of the region and neighbouring Angola.

She said that not only was Safland proud of the mall as such but also of the much-anticipated job opportunities created as part of this construction.

The overall contribution to retail sales of the Rundu mall is estimated at N$280 million per annum, and N$1,6 billion over five years, while Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is estimated at N$ 120 million and the development value at N$165 million.

The mall represents a N$165 million investment at Rundu by Safcoll. Safcoll is the joint venture company that was formed by Collins Properties and Safland International. Rundu Mall follows in the footsteps of similar malls by Safland in Ondangwa, Otjiwarongo and The Grove, the largest mall in Namibia, which is situated in Windhoek. Safland together with Safcoll has already started with construction on the Dunes mall in Walvis Bay and this will be followed by developments in Oshakati, Katima Mulilo and Gobabis, with more to come in Windhoek. These developments pioneered by Safland represent investments of N$1,6 billion in retail development within Namibia over a period of four years.
