A FIRE destroyed the girls’ hostel at the Eddie Bowe Primary School at Khorixas this morning.
No one was injured as all the children were in class when smoke started billowing from the building, prompting a resident to call the fire brigade.
Khorixas municipal manager for corporate services Eben Xoagub said the emergency call was made about 09h30 and that it took firefighters about 10 minutes to get to the school.
He said two rooms and one bathroom were completely destroyed while the other rooms suffered extensive damage.
“We think it may have been a short circuit,” he said.
Deputy director for education in Kunene region Alwina !Aibes said all six rooms at the hostel, including a bathroom and two supervisors’ rooms were destroyed.
There are 92 girls accommodated in the hostel, and according to !Aibes 20 of them lost everything in personal belongings. Others managed to salvage some of their belongings.
“They only have the school uniforms they wore and their school bags. Everything else was burned. Beds and clothes, windows, walls and the roof all was destroyed,” she said.
She said that an investigation will be done to ascertain the cause of the fire.
Meanwhile !Aibes has appealed to well wishers for all the help they can get, especially with clothes and blankets.
She said anyone wishing to her can call her office on 067-335019.
