With Independence Day celebrations taking place tomorrow at the copper town of Tsumeb, workers and contractors from both private and government agencies are hard at work making sure everything is in place before the big day.
When The Namibian visited the Oscar Norich Stadium at the town this morning, workers were trying to remove muddy water from one of the tents – one of the less desired effects of the welcome rainy weather the town has been experiencing for the past few days. Several cultural and entertainment groups from across the country were also spotted practising at the stadium.
Despite the challenge of the rain, some locals The Namibian spoke to expressed optimism over tomorrow’s festivities.
Alma Nakaaludhe (27), who will be in attendance tomorrow, said she was happy because she was born after Namibia attained its independence and the country has since been free. “I will also be happy to see and meet the President for the first time because I have never seen him as well as the ministers and [other] national leaders,” she said.
Anna Tobias, who will also be going to the stadium, said she was happy that the celebrations would be taking place at Tsumeb, as it gives each town a chance to host it. Like Nakaaludhe, she said she was also looking forward to meeting the national leaders.
