A highly anticipated quarterfinal clash between league champions FC Ongos Ladies and NDF Mighty Gunners Ladies headlines this weekend’s women’s NFA Cup action as the remaining eight teams battle for places in the semifinals.
The quarterfinal matches are scheduled for Saturday at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek, with all four fixtures taking place at the same venue.
The clash between FC Ongos Ladies and NDF Mighty Gunners Ladies is expected to be the main fixture of the quarterfinals, with the two sides among the leading teams in the Women’s Super League this season.
Mighty Gunners will be looking to bounce back after narrowly missing out on the FNB Women’s Super League title before producing a dominant 7-0 victory over VPower Angels in the Round of 16.
League champions Ongos enter the competition at the quarterfinal stage after receiving a bye and will be determined to continue and conclude their successful season with a cup run.
Elsewhere, Khomas Nampol Ladies will take on Unam Bokkies after securing an impressive 5-2 victory over Arrows Ladies in the previous round.
Nampol winger Thomalina Adams says winning the NFA Cup has become the team’s main objective after finishing third in the league.
“Our main aim now is to win this title because we came third in the league, so the NFA Cup is our main priority now,” Adams said following their Round of 16 victory.
Another intriguing fixture will see Nust Babes face Julinho Athletic Ladies.
Nust Babes produced one of the surprises of the previous round when they eliminated Mighty Angels 4-2 despite recently being relegated from the Women’s Super League. A victory this weekend would move them one step closer to an unlikely cup triumph.
African Stars Queens will meanwhile face Windhoek City after the latter edged Desert Foxes 2-1 to book their place in the last eight.
With league positions and recent form offering little guarantee in knockout football, the race for the Women’s NFA Cup title is set to intensify as the competition enters its decisive stages.
