FC Covid were crowned the ninth Queensab Soccer Bonanza champions after defeating Super Stars on penalties following a goalless draw at Rehoboth over the weekend.
Tournament’s organiser Rhuuksie ||Garoëb says out of 36 teams that entered, FC Covid emerged as champions in a tense final, edging out Super Stars on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time.
The final showdown at the Rehoboth Stadium saw the Windhoek-based team clinch victory with a 4-2 win on penalties, securing the N$50 000 prize pot.
Covid FC took home N$25 000, a floating trophy and 20 gold medals, while Super Stars from the Hardap Second Division received N$12 500 and 20 silver medals. Semi-finalists MPSH FC and Airport Eagles pocketed N$12 500 each.
“The tournament kicked off on Saturday with a lively, packed stadium, as teams competed fiercely for the coveted title. On their way to the final, Covid FC defeated Airport Eagles 5-4 on penalties in a nail-biting semi-final, while Super Stars edged out a star-studded MPSH FC on penalties as well.”
Engelbrecht says beyond football, the event turned into a festive carnival atmosphere, giving thanks to the vendors who created a lively, food-filled environment.
“These tournaments do more than just bring excitement, they boost the local economy and support small businesses,” one vendor said at the event.
“If the floodlights at the stadium were upgraded to meet standards, we could host more matches, sell more stock, and make more profit,” another added.
||Garoëb has expressed gratitude to all involved, praising the community spirit that made the weekend incident-free.
“A big thank you to all the teams, the Rehoboth community, spectators, support staff, officials, local transport providers, and everyone else who helped make this event a success,” he says.
He has thanked the vendors, the Rehoboth Town Council and its workers, the local police, the ball boys, DJ Nation, and media partners The Namibian, Kaisames, and New Era.
A special shoutout went to the local police and support staff for ensuring safety and order throughout the tournament. “It’s been a fantastic weekend of football, friendship, and community spirit,” //Garoëb says.
Looking ahead, the organisers are hopeful for even bigger and better editions in the future, especially if infrastructure improvements like upgraded floodlights are made.
