Exciting matches in store as NPL resumes

The Namibia Premier League finally resumes after a break of nearly two months when Cymot SKW take on African Stars at the SKW Stadium at 19h00 tonight.

A victory for SKW will put them three points clear at the top of the table, but Stars will be desperate to get back amongst the title contenders as they are currently lying fifth, five points off the pace. SKW have strengthened their squad with a number of new signings during the January transfer window.SKW’s new signings Gunter von Hundelshausen joins the team after recently returning to Namibia from Germany where he studied. The Otjiwarongo-born Von Hundelshausen played as a defensive midfielder for the regional team SpVgg Mogeldorf in Germany and should be a good acquisition for the Olympia-based club.Former Black Africa winger Tjono Jagger has also joined SKW and will definitely add more bite to their attacks. He has been one of the top wingers in the league over the past two seasons and will fight it out with Albertus Cloete for a place in the starting line-up.African Stars’ young midfielder Michael Mauha has also been recruited by SKW.All three played for SKW in their friendly against visiting Angolan side Petro de Atletico on January 24, which they lost 2-0.With striker Arend von Stryk back to full fitness and midfielder Marco van Wyk also amongst the early leading goal scorers, SKW will be confident of winning this match on their home ground.Stars confident Stars have not made any major signings, and will be weakened by the loss of wingback Steve Tjeenao, who has returned to Chief Santos in Tsumeb.Evergreen midfielder Congo Hindjou has also not recovered from an ankle injury, but they have an astute coach in Gilbert Rwasoka and one of the tightest defences in the league.Stars’ manager Lesley Kozonguizi said they were happy with their squad and did not feel the need to sign new players. We are happy with the squad for now and will only look at new players next season. We are positive and our aim is to win the league, so we will go full out for victory against SKW,” he said.Civics take on Ramblers The match of the weekend takes place on Friday night when defending champions Civics take on Ramblers at the Khomasdal Field.Civics have had a poor start to the season and are currently sixth on the log – five points behind Ramblers who lead on 16 points.Civics will have to win if they hope to remain a contender this season, but their task will be very difficult especially since they lost some of their top players over the past month.Defender Donnelly Nel and midfielder Bradley Wermann have, ironically, joined Ramblers, while Lionel van Schalkwyk, Sean Titus and Knowledge Iipinge have also joined other clubs. But Civics have been strengthened by the return of national players Jamu Ngatjizeko, Franklin April and Namibia’s star player in Ghana, Brian Brendell.According to Civics’ team manager Paul Stramis, they are taking the match very seriously. We know how important this match is for us, because if we don’t win it will make things very difficult for us.That already serves as a big motivation, and I can promise Ramblers that they will be in for a tough match,” he said. The match takes place at the Khomasdal Stadium, since the Sam Nujoma Stadium will be closed for the next few months due to renovations. The City of Windhoek recently changed its mind and agreed to install an artificial turf, which has been donated by FIFA, and work on this will commence shortly. The weekend’s other matches are as follows: Saturday: 18h00: Orlando Pirates v APS Blue Waters, Khomasdal Stadium 18h00: Fedics United v Tigers, J Stephanus Stadium, Keetmanshoop 18h00: Mighty Gunners v Oshakati City, Mokati Stadium,
