Emergency Funds Used for Renovations

I-Ben Nashandi

Reports by Namibian Sun that about N$30 million of disaster emergency funds were spent on renovating presidential buildings and that N$260m was “unauthorised”, point to a gross lack of good governance.

More bizarre is the explanation by the executive director in the office of the prime minister, I-Ben Nashandi, who said the N$30 million was deposited in the National Disaster Emergency Fund though long-intended for the renovations at the old State House.

Why would money meant for the Office of the President end up in the disaster relief account?

Kudos to the auditors for making sure the public is informed about such gross malfeasance albeit about eight years later.

The issue is also why no one is ever punished for what amounts to irregularities and a loss of public money?
