I have been avoiding wearing prescription glasses for almost a year, out of sheer stubbornness.
Part of the reason is that they’re so damn uncomfortable to get used to wearing. I’ve been assured, by those wearing spectacles for years, that the slight headaches are all part of the adapting process.
I lived in denial and ignored the red flags along the way that my eyesight was weakening and I really needed glasses, especially when reading or working on the laptop. My reasoning was: This too shall pass. Meanwhile I’ve been suffering a great deal with teary and burning eyes every time I spend a little too long on the laptop.
Not sure why we as human beings are so stubborn, especially when it comes to facing realities that don’t suit our expectations and desires. We tend to live in denial for too long before we are forced to come to terms with the truth.
Accepting the truth is something we find hard to do, especially when it doesn’t fall in line with the things we want for ourselves.
Perhaps this is one of the contributors to delaying the inevitable in our lives. It simply prolongs the future we so desire to have. If I look at most ‘successful’ people around me, many have embraced who they are and accept their flaws.
Yet here I am, finding it hard to accept something as simple as having to wear specs. Why is this so difficult? It isn’t as if these glasses throw off my look, if the compliments I’ve been receiving are anything to go by.
But I am struggling to embrace them. After two months of lazily searching for a suitable pair, I finally found them and I am giving it another shot.
I’ve been wearing the new pair for four days now and it’s still a challenge. But just as I pulled through on this year’s ‘Movember’ challenge, I will do this too. Before I damage my eyesight any more.
Unfortunately it seems like the more I read, and the more time I spend in front of my laptop, the more I need them. This is a reality I will have to embrace for my own good.
Gents, sometimes we just have to accept who we are. Embrace it and stop trying to be someone else. Keep it real, you know what I mean? Give it a try!
Till next time, cheers!
