Eight teams progressed to the quarterfinals of the women’s NFA Cup competition after completion of the Round of 16 matches over the weekend.

Most of the favourites won their round of 16 matches, but there was one slight upset as Nust Babes beat Mighty Angels 4-2.

Nust Babes were relegated from the FNB Women Super League after finishing second last on the log, while Mighty Angels just managed to escape the relegation axe after finishing one place above them.

With their victory, Nust Babes have now moved into the last eight where they will take on Julinho Athletic Ladies.

Mighty Gunners Ladies, who agonisingly missed out on winning the league title last weekend, struck back with a vengeance to beat VPower Angels 7-0 on Saturday.

Gunners started off in a hurry with Fiona Vliete scoring after only one minute, while further goals by Leena Alweendo and Vliete’s second gave them a comfortable 3-0 lead by half time.

Gunners continued to dominate after the break with goals by Utuzuvira Kahiriri, Unondjamo Kaetjavi, Lorraine Jossob and Alweendo’s second completing a commanding win.

The win put Gunners into the quarterfinals where they have been matched up against their arch rivals, and league champions, FC Ongos, in the standout fixture of the last eight. Ongos, as one of the seeded teams in the tournament, received a bye into the quarterfinals.

Khomas Nampol also got off to a great start as they beat Arrows Ladies 5-2.

Thomalina Adams gave them the lead after barely a minute while further goals by Helena Shuumbwa and Twelikondjela Amukoto put them 3-0 up after 20 minutes.

Hope Silusava opened Arrows’ account, but Amukoto put the issue beyond doubt with her second goal and Nampol’s fourth just before halftime.

After the break Tjamunene Ndjavera made it 5-1 although Silusava added a second goal to make the final score 5-2.

Nampol’s long-serving national winger Thomalina Adams said they are determined to win the NFA Cup after missing out on the league title.

“Our only plan was to come here and take the victory – we already managed to do that in the first half when we scored four of our goals.  Our main aim now is to win this title because we came third in the league, so the NFA Cup is our main priority now,” she said.

Khomas Nampol will now play Unam Bokkies in the quarterfinals, who also received a bye to the last eight.

In another match on Saturday, Windhoek City beat Desert Foxes 2-1, to book a quarterfinal spot against African Stars Queens.
