EGYPT dominated the Table Tennis competition at the 2012 Federation of Africa Sports Universities (FASU) Games after winning all seven categories, while Algeria won the Men’s Football competition.
At the UNAM Main Hall, Egypt’s dominance of Table Tennis was unsurpassed as they won all seven titles on offer.In the Women’s Team event, Farah Abdelazziz, Reem Elshobary and Galela Nasser of Egypt came first, followed by Fatiha Bouclares, Fatima Mabrouk, Talahi Kaouther, and Menaifi Khaoula of Algeria, while Cynthia Kwabi and Gloria Adjei of Ghana came third.Phemelo Gaborapelwe, Tshepiso Rebatenne and Goemeone Lesifa of Botswana came fourth, while Brigitte George, Carmen Brits and Cecilia de Klerk of Namibia came fifth.In the Men’s Team event, Egypt once again took top honours with their team consisting of Khaled Asser, Mohamed El Beialy, Mohamed Shoman and Mohamed Tarek.The Algerian team of Kherouf Samy, Zaidi Salah, Belkadi Aissa and Bouaouni Mohamed came second, while the Ghanaian team of Raymond Donkor and Reginald Ankamah came third.Botswana’s team of Tshoka Phiri, Mooketsi Dimbo, Tlamelo Ntebele and Thabang Mosime came fourth, while the Namibian team of Wayne Green, Shaheed January, Quinton Hoaseb, Devano Mowes and Leroy Beukes came fifth. The Zambian team of Edson Nsonga and Steven Mbewe came last.Egypt won the Women;s Doubles title, followed by Algeria and Ghana, while Egypt took the first three places in the Men’s Doubles competition.In the Mixed Doubles competition, Egypt won gold and silver while Algeria won the bronze medal.In the ladies singles final Farah Abdelazziz of Egypt won the gold medal, followed by compatriots Reem Elshobary and Galila Nasser, while Algerian Talahi Kahouter came fourht.In the men’s’ single final Mohamed Shoman of Egypt won the gold medal, with team mates Mohamed Elbeialy winning silver and Khaled Assar bronze.In Basketball action, Namibia’s men’s team had to beat Egypt to reach the final on Thursday afternoon and they did just that as they narrowly defeated the Egyptians 77-72 on Wednesday night.Namibia will now meet Egypt for the third time in the final, after Egypt won their first encounter 85-70.In the women’s section of Basketball, the final match will be between the host Namibia and the favourites Mozambique at 16h00 at the UNAM Gymnasium on Thursday. Botswana will finish third.In Karate, Egypt won the Women’s Kumite U50kg, the U55 kg, the U68 kg as well as the U68kg categories. Algeria took the U67kg for the ladies.In the men’s section, Egypt won the U60kg and the U84kg categories, while Algeria won the U84kg, the U75kg as well as the U67kg categories.Namibia and Botswana shared third place after Anaene Nathaniel of Namibia and Mpeo Otsile of Botswana finished tied in third place.In Men’s football, Algeria won gold after their 2-0 victory over Namibia coupled with their 3-1 win over Botswana for six points. Namibia finishes second with three points after their 4-1 defeat of Botswana, who came third.
