‘Drunken’ convict fined after pedestrian accident

Steven Mulundu

The man who was arrested in 2021 for allegedly disposing of Shannon Wasserfall’s body in 2020 was fined after allowing an unlicensed woman to drive a vehicle, resulting in a serious pedestrian accident at Swakopmund on Sunday.

Steven Mulundu and the unlicensed driver, Thadiana Xoagus, were apprehended shortly after the incident that has left a pedestrian fighting for her life in hospital.

Mulundu was sentenced to an effective prison term of four years on 13 June 2023, following the conclusion of the Wasserfall murder trial in the Windhoek High Court.

While he was acquitted of the murder and robbery charges, judge Christie Liebenberg found him guilty of defeating or obstructing the course of justice due to his role in concealing Wasserfall’s death in 2020.

He has since served time and has been released from jail.

In the latest incident, Mulundu was arrested at DRC Police Station on Monday and was later released after paying an admission of guilt fine in court, following the pedestrian accident.

Xoagus appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court on charges of negligent driving on Monday.

The incident took place at about 09h00 on Sunday morning, while the victim was on her way to a church service.

Witnesses have described a vehicle travelling at excessive speed, passing a T-junction before hitting the woman, the police say.

Mulundu was initially allegedly behind the wheel of the vehicle, carrying four passengers.

Modesa Police Station commander senior inspector Ulrich Beukes says Mulundu, whose blood-alcohol level was 0.71%, allegedly stopped the car and handed the steering wheel to Xoagus, who was also intoxicated.

“The lady was tested for alcohol and was under the influence,” he says, with a blood-alcohol level of 0.69%.

Beukes says Xoagus is not in possession of a valid driving licence and lost control of the vehicle, mounting the pavement and striking the pedestrian.

BLOODY SCENE … The vehicle driven by a young woman without a valid driving licence, who was arrested and charged with negligent driving after hitting a pedestrian on her way to church, appears to have a dent on the driver’s side, slightly close to the headlight.

Sources claim the suspects attempted to cover up the crime before the authorities arrived and that after picking up the severely injured victim and putting her in the vehicle, one of the four occupants allegedly began cleaning up the blood on the pavement.

The victim, identified only as ‘Teresia’, underwent emergency surgery to her legs on Monday.
