Domestic tourism is quite important in Namibia, because many people rely on this money to make an impact in the country’s economic sector. The Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) is constantly trying to promote the country, not only abroad but internationally as well.
In fact, a majority of our tourists come from abroad, including countries such as Netherlands, the United States of America, Italy and Spain. But there are plenty of areas in Namibia which are quite suitable for honeymooning, especially for couples looking for a sense of peace and serenity.
Digu //Naobeb, chief executive officer of NTB, encourages domestic tourism in Namibia. “Domestic tourism is vital for continued sustainability of the tourism industry in general. Thus, it requires more support from all stakeholders in creating awareness among the Namibian populace in order to inculcate the culture of travel, as information might be a barrier for local travel.”
Statistics say that domestic tourism accounted for about 35,6% of the total bed nights in the accommodation establishments excluding camping. In other words, local people (which include families and couples travelling anywhere in Namibia) are slowly picking up, but the tourism industry wants to see more people exploring their country.
Rebekka Hidulika, NTB’s manager of digital marketing, also elaborated on this point. “There is a lot to be explored in the country.”
#ShareMyNamibia is one of the many campaigns which have been launched where local celebrities such as Ees and Dillish Matthews travelled throughout Namibia to show everyone that holidaying in Namibia is an excellent choice for families and couples who just want to spend a weekend in a quiet area.
Gazza, who is the ambassador of the campaign this year, explained that he is on a mission to reveal Namibia’s beauty. “The Chinese refer to Namibia as an ‘undiscovered paradise’. We are hoping to reveal the paradise that the Chinese people have seen in Namibia. Many people who are honeymoon tend to go abroad. The sky is the limit when it comes to Namibia.”
A variety of lodges in Namibia provide honeymoon specials where couples can enjoy wonderful massages. If you are up for an adventure of a lifetime, you can experience the Kavango River by canoe, or unleash your curious side and go on a safari drive together, looking at animals such as unique birds or elephants and other wild animals.
In fact, honeymooning in Namibia may be cheaper than buying a ticket to Seychelles and staying there for a day or two. If you’re looking for a new experience that’s closer to home, perhaps Namibia is not such a bad idea, and opting to choose locations you have never been to before will help tremendously to make your honeymoon an occasion of a lifetime.
