DJ Melza just getting started

PROVING that it’s never too late to pursue her passions, Melissa Snyders (37), a Windhoek-based wife and mother of two, has transformed her love for old-school beats into the best kind of side hustle – one that embraces her passion for music, people and good times.

In her unique and quirky way, DJ Melza is pushing back against society’s expectations of married women and mothers.

“I am teaching my children to chase their dreams,” she says.

Snyders was first introduced to Namibian music lovers at the Vocalcast Production Old School event held in Windhoek at the end of last year, but her love for music started long before this.

“It has always been part of the person I am today.

“I grew up in a house where old-school music was played all the time. I couldn’t help but fall in love with the sounds of Incognito, Earth Wind and Fire, and Natalie Cole, to mention a few,” says Snyders, who holds down an eight-to-five job in the fuel industry.

Her start in the music industry came rather accidentally, she says.

“About seven years ago, a friend of ours, who is also a DJ, invited us over to spend the day. This is when my curiosity got the better of me, and I asked my husband to show me how to work the decks.”

Snyders’ children are some of her biggest inspirations, and, like every mother, she strives to be the best possible example to them.

“On numerous occasions they have told me how proud they are of me, and nothing makes me happier.”

With first-hand experience of the power of music to bring people together, Snyders says this is why she loves being a DJ.

“For me, there isn’t much that brings joy like when I see people from different walks of life jamming to the sound of music,” she says.

Keeping people on the dance floor is not as easy as it looks, and reading the crowd is a special talent, she says.

“Play what they want to hear. This is key to keeping your crowd’s attention.”

Snyders says there are some events in the planning for 2022, and music lovers should stay tuned for updates.

“I’m hoping that by taking on this new season of my life it proves to others you are the boss of your life story. It is never too late to challenge yourself.

“Age is just a number, and DJ Melza is just getting started!”
