The City of Windhoek warns residents and businesses against illegal water connections, saying offenders could face fines and possible imprisonment.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, the municipality reminds residents that illegal water connections can lead to legal consequences and urges them to refrain from the practice.
The city says illegal water connections include connecting to the municipal water network without approval, tampering with or bypassing water meters, reconnecting water supplies after disconnection by the municipality, and unlawfully supplying water to neighbouring properties.
Residents and businesses found in violation can face the immediate disconnection of their water supply, fines of up to N$1 000 and back charges based on estimated water consumption.
The municipality adds that offenders could be held liable for investigation, repair and administrative costs.
The city warns that legal action may be instituted under clause 74 of the water supply regulation, which provides for a fine of up to N$2 000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both, upon conviction.
The city urges residents to report suspected illegal water connections through its customer contact centre.
