DHPS hosts German Schools Olympiad

WINDHOEK – Around 250 learners, 50 teachers and supervisors, as well as a large number of organisers and sponsors are eagerly awaiting the 17th Sports Olympiad of German schools in southern Africa which will be held from 16 to 21 September.

The organiser and venue of the biennial event this year is the Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS), where preparations are in full swing thanks to the cooperation of the entire school community.

“The hosting schools always invest and commit themselves with the entire organisation, accommodation, catering and transport for the athletes and their attendants. We are very grateful for this team effort,” DHPS Principal, Kristin Eichholz said.

From 17 to 20 September, the young athletes aged between 12 and 18 will compete against each other in the disciplines of swimming, athletics, handball, volleyball, basketball and football. But not only the competitions are in the foreground.

“It is important to meet, get to know each other and foster the contacts in games, sports and fun. The objective includes the willingness to understand, mutual recognition and the promotion of a sense of community. The stop watch and measuring tape are not the key items – although a healthy competitive spirit must not be missing”, said Thorsten Horenburg, head of the DHPS sports department.

The competitions will be held at the DHPS sports premises. Optimal conditions for the athletes are offered on the lawn and multi-purpose sports field, in the swimming pool and of course at the brand new DHPS gym, one of the most modern sports facilities in Namibia, which was completed in March thanks to the great commitment and financing of the school community and the German Federal Foreign Office. Due to the large number of participants, the athletics competitions will take place in the Independence Stadium. Parents and sports enthusiasts are welcome at all competitions.

“For Windhoek and the DHPS it is a special honour to welcome the participating German schools from Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Hermannsburg and since 2016 even Accra in Ghana. This special sports event has taken place alternately at one of the participating schools since 1986,” Tina Cruys, the public relations sports coordinator of DHPS said.

The opening ceremony of the event with a supporting programme and reception for invited guests will take place on Sunday, 16 September.
