THE Debmarine Namibia Premier Football League yesterday conducted a draw for the first round of matches that are slated to take place this coming Saturday, 16 September.
League director Mabos Vries indicated that the reason why it took so long for the fixtures to be available was because the league was busy negotiating with its sponsor Debmarine.
“Our contract was for a year with an option to renew, so the negotiations took a while. Our initial idea was to play single-headers, but unfortunately we couldn’t succeed with our expectations,” Vries explained.
Teams were drawn in two pots – one for eight Windhoek-based teams, and one for six teams outside Windhoek as well as two Windhoek-based teams.
Young Brazilians will host Khomas Nampol in Keetmanshoop; Blue Waters will face newly-promoted Okakara Warriors in Swakopmund; while another newly-promoted team Chula Chula will play against Mighty Gunners at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
In Windhoek, the defending champions African Stars will begin their title defence against Orlando Pirates, while Civics will play Tigers.
Okahandja United will host Unam, while Julinho Sporting will host Life Fighters in Rundu, and Young African will host Ongos Football Club at Gobabis.
Various participating clubs were present at the draw and they indicated that although the draw was late they will do their best to prepare.
Norton Luis, co-owner of Julinho Sporting said that they will have to make do with the limited time available.
“It’s a bit surprising because we have a limited time to prepare for the trip and finalize the team in a short space of time, but we are happy the league is starting,” he said.
Young African owner and coach Maleagi Ngarizemo said that they are ready to host Ongos Football Club, formerly known as Tura Magic.
“We have to acknowledge Debmarine for making sure that football is being played in the country. We have been preparing and we are looking forward to play this weekend – there’s no excuse,’’ he said.
The fixtures are attached.
