De Sousa reaches All American target

STELLAR … Sade de Sousa was rewarded with an All American status after a sterling indoor circuit season.

SADE de Sousa is delighted about breaking the Namibian women’s national 60m record again and earning All-Ameri- can honours after placing fifth at the NCAA Division II Track and Field Indoor Champion- ships in Birmingham, USA, on Saturday.

The 21-year-old Carson Newman University freshman has improved the record three times since December 2022, lowering it from 7,46 seconds to 7,43, then 7,41 and now 7,37.

“It’s definitely a good start, and it makes me optimistic about what the outdoor season has in store. I think it’s going to be a very interesting season for sure,” she told The Namibian Sport yesterday.

TheAll-America designation is an annual honour bestowed upon an amateur athlete com- peting in the United States who is considered to be one of the best amateurs in their sport.

Individuals receiving this distinction are typically added

to an All-American team for their sport.

“I’m really happy with how my indoor season came to an end. It was my goal from the beginning to become a first team All American,” said De Sousa.

“And, it was definitely my goal from the start to run 7,3 seconds. I told my coach I need to run 7,3 before indoor is over, and I did. Crazy enough, I did it in a final which I’m really happy about, she said about her latest feat.

“I’m really happy with my achievements so far. I set little goals for myself and I tried to achieve those little goals one step at a time.”

The former national 200-me- tre champion has been beset by a series niggling injuries which hampered her progress since her breakthrough five years ago.

However, her sterling recent form suggest she has recovered sufficiently to revive her career. Should her form hold up, she could be lining up against the world’s best at the Olympics in Paris next year.
