Corner Kapana, located at Rundu, is a burger outlet which opened it doors in April last year.
Owner and chef Frolinus Darocha is operating the business from home.
He plans to expand his business, saying from the end of January clients can expect hake fillets and chicken burgers on the menu.
Darocha says he has loved cooking since he was a little boy.
“Cooking is not a trait of one gender only. It is a skill anyone can learn. Many of the world’s best chefs are men.
“Yes, the majority of us come from the traditional household where mom cooks and dad doesn’t. In the professional world, kitchens can have male staff members only,” he says.
Darocha says he got the idea to open his own business in 2019 already, but only managed to obtain the start-up capital to do so last year.
“While at university trying to finish my degree, I thought why not find a way to make some extra pocket money with my hobby. At first it was just a side hustle to keep some extra cash in my pocket as I study towards my degree,” he says.
Darocha says opening the business has not only given him the platform to follow his dream, but has also challenged him to leave his comfort zone, work hard, and learn more about the industry.
“The name of my business is Corner Kapana. The word ‘corner’ is actually translated from the Rukwangali word ‘mohuke’, which literally means corner. Mohuke is the name of the enterprise I am hoping to create one day.
“The name was inspired by the idea that before you build any type of structure the cornerstone is the first to be laid,” he says.
Darocha says starting his business was not easy.
“I built a small braai stand and placed it in front of a local bar. The business was not really taking off due to the Covid-19 restrictions on bars at the time.
“In August 2021 business was so bad that I moved the stand to my house. That same year in November I took a different approach. I decided to sell from home, coupled with a delivery service,” Darocha says.
He believes the business is successful because it is different and it offers excellent customer service.
