THERE was lots of drama in the MTC NFA Cup competition in Walvis Bay over the weekend as both coastal teams Blue Waters and Eleven Arrows crashed out of the tournament.
Blue Waters lost 1-0 to Khomas First Division side Hotspurs, while Arrows lost a penalty shootout 5-3 to Black Africa. Both teams will rue their wasted chances and especially Arrows’ Bolle Haraseb will rue his poor spot kick that handed victory to Black Africa. In a tightly-marked match of few chances, the teams were tied 0-0 at the end of full time and the match had to be decided on penalties.Masepo Dausab put BA 4-3 ahead in the penalty shootout when Haraseb stepped up for Arrows. But his shot had no power and went straight to BA keeper Stephanus Dila who easily saved the ball to book BA’s passage to the last eight of the competition.Blue Waters also just had themselves to blame as a defensive error led to their downfall. The match seemed to be heading for a draw when a defender gave a weak backpass to Blue Waters’ keeper and Hotspurs striker Edward Asino nipped in to put the ball in the back of the net.Blue Waters fought back strongly, and had a great chance to equalise in the dying minutes, but Fisher Kalimba shot over the bar with only the goalie to beat.Fedics United ran out comfortable 6-1 winners over Eleven Brothers, but they took quite a while to secure their victory.Fedics went ahead through a goal by Clarence Andries after only three minutes, but Oswald Naoseb equalised 11 minutes later.Just before halftime Ashley Josop put Fedics 2-1 ahead before the floodgates opened in the second half.Andries scored his second goal and further goals for Lotten Swartz, Willie Stephanus and Bruno Hendricks gave them a comfortable victory.Wesley Kinda scored a hat-trick for Tigers as they beat Black Hawks from Katima Mulilo 3-2.But it was not a very convincing performance by Tigers and they had to pull out all the stops to beat Black Hawks who fought till the end.STARS BEAT OSHAKATI CITY The defending champions African Stars beat Oshakati City 2-0 despite playing with 10 men for the last quarter of the match.Stars gave an inspired performance and took the lead through Edison Muheua in the 13th minute.Getzen Ndjaharine put Stars further ahead with a spectacular shot in the 29th minute.Oshakati gave a below par performance and could not capitalise when Stars’ defender Kanu Kondorozu was red carded for a second offence in the 66th minute.Cymot SKW beat Tough Guys 5-0 but it took them quite a while to break the Omaheke team’s resistance down.Marco van Wyk put SKW ahead just before halftime but goals by Arend von Stryk (2), Patrick Jagger and Bobby Kaapama gave SKW a comfortable victory in the end.Ramblers were rather fortunate to beat Mighty Gunners 2-0 in a cracking encounter.Pinias Jacob put Ramblers ahead when he stabbed in a great cross just before half-time.Gunners seemed to equalise in the second half when they hit the back of the net, but the linesman disallowed the goal for offside.John Samson put Ramblers 2-0 ahead in the 60th minute.Civics beat Orlando Pirates 1-0 through a great goal by Floris Diergaardt with 10 minutes remaining. The match seemed to be heading for a draw when Diergaardt unleashed a cracking shot that hit the back of the net.Pirates had several chances, hitting the upright twice, but they could not get past Civics keeper Esau Tjiouro who pulled off some fine saves.www.namibiasport.com.naBoth teams will rue their
