THE Namibia Tennis Association’s (NTA) Club Tennis League continued over the weekend with some exciting matches taking place in the Men and Women’s Second Division at the Central Tennis Club.
In the Men’s Second Division the Nust University team jumped to second position on the log after defeating CTC 2B 13-7, while last year’s champions, CTC 2A consolidated their top spot with a 15-5 win against Unam.
In the Women’s Second Division the OTB women’s team was too strong for the Nust student team, winning their match 20-0.
In the Men’s Second Division Nust’s top-ranked player Socrates Muyambo beat CTC B’s Ronaldo Uriab 6-4, 6-4, while Colin Nyandoro had to overcome some stiff resistance from CTC 2B’s Lawrence Kahindi. After losing the first set Nyandoro made a fine comeback to win the match 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
In the doubles CTC 2B was luckier as Danai Muyambelo and Kyalo Kitheka beat Robert Riethmueller and Miguel Valleyo Orti 6-2, 6-4. In the remaining doubles Nust’s Socrates Muyambo and Colin Nyandoro beat Muyambelo and Kitheka 6-2, 6-4 while the CTC 2B combination of Kahindi and Uirab trounced Riethmueller and Valleyo Orti 6-1, 6-0.
In the second match, the defending champions CTC 2A side took 15 out of a possible 20 match points against a strong Unam side. Namibia’s top u18 junior player Dantago Gawanab defeated Unam’s Eno Akpabio 7-6, 6-4 while Risto Shikongo beat Martin Koroma 6-4, 6-4.
Unam’s doubles combination of Patrick Paulus and Kudzai Gangayi had the upper hand against CTC 2A’s Samson Kaulinge and Hillary Charuma, winning a thrilling match 3-6, 6-4, 11-9, after coming back from five points down in the final set.
CTC 2A’s junior doubles team of Gawanab and Shikongo easily defeated Paulus and Gangayi 6-2, 6-1 but Unam’s Akpabio and Koroma beat CTC 2A’s Charuma and Kaulinge 6-4, 6-4.
The matches in the Women’s Second Division saw one-sided results.
OTB won a maximum of 60 game points against the student rookies of Nust. Lena Brinkmann defeated Jana Klindworth 6-1, 6-0, while Javaneh Azadeh beat Salome Nguaiko 6-2, 6-3.
OTB’s Nicky McNamara and Debbie Rowles beat Stefanie Garises and Natalia Kupembona 6-0, 6-0.
In the reverse doubles Lena Brinkmann and Javaneh Azadeh beat Stefanie Garises and Natalia Kupembona 6-0, 6-1. The league continues this coming Saturday, 10 September with matches in the Men’s Second and Women’s First and Second Divisions.
