Swapo politician Peya Mushelenga has returned to the National Assembly after being sworn in as a member of parliament, replacing James Uerikua who died on 3 April.
Speaking after taking oath in Windhoek on Friday, Mushelenga said lawmakers must serve the country beyond party interests.
He said he would prioritise advancing the Swapo Party manifesto while working across political lines in the parliament.
“Although you come to parliament representing a political party, you are here as a member of the National Assembly serving the country ideally,” he said.
He said his role would include ensuring that commitments made to the electorate are implemented.
“I would have to look and ensure we implement the manifesto we presented to the electorate,” he said.
Mushelenga said the national budget remains central to parliamentary work, as it cuts across all sectors.
“A budget is that law which covers almost all areas. That’s why during the second reading, a member can talk about anything in the country he or she feels is of particular interest,” he said.
Mushelenga said his contributions would focus on areas aligned with his experience and interests.
“I’m passionate about issues of international relations. I’m passionate about issues of education. I’m passionate about issues of economic development,” he said.
