Civics into second spot

Civics into second spot

CIVIC’S 2-0 victory over Ramblers on a chilly Wednesday evening at the Khomasdal Stadium elevated them to second place on the MTC Namibia Premier League log, now with 35 points.

Up from fourth place earlier this week, defending champions Civics are now on par with log leaders Orlando Pirates with 35 points, but Orlando Pirates are still first because of a better goal difference. The ‘Civilians’ goals came off the boots of striker Patrick M’kontwana and midfielder Tugela Tuyeni in the second half. The half time score was 0-0 as both teams tried in vain to penetrate each others defences.Civics defender Erastus Ndjavera once again stood tall for his team, with efforts from Ramblers playmaker Nelson Akwenye and Co being thwarted repeatedly.Ramblers lost concentration in the last quarter of the second half and a cross from Sedekia Haukambe led to the opening goal MŽkotwana, while a perfect shot from outside the box by Tuyeni, who came on as a substitute killed off Ramblers in the last minute of the match.Ramblers are now in third place, down from second place earlier in the week with 34 points, followed by Black Africa with 33 points, while Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) are placed fifth with 32 points.Civics team manager Paul Stramis said the winner of the 2007/08 season will thus have to be determined mathematically on the final day of league matches on 12 July.Stramis said the competition is between the top five teams on the log, adding that anything could still happen. He said their next match against SKW on Saturday at the Independence Stadium will obviously be a tough game, but they will fight tooth and nail for a victory because they do not want a draw or a defeat at this crucial stages of the race.See weekend fixtures elsewhere.Nampa-and Own ReporterThe ‘Civilians’ goals came off the boots of striker Patrick M’kontwana and midfielder Tugela Tuyeni in the second half. He said their next match against SKW on Saturday at the Independence Stadium will obviously be a tough game, but they will fight tooth and nail for a victory because they do not want a draw or a defeat at this crucial stages of the race.See weekend fixtures elsewhere.Nampa-and Own Reporter
