Civics and City record most NPL signings

PREMIERSHIP defending champions Civics and northern-based Oshakati City made the most signings for this season, with both teams beefing up their squads with eight new players.

Civics, who have won the league twice in a row, signed two strikers in Frans de Muinda, who moved from Orlando Pirates, and Eusobio Fredericks, who joined in from Luederitz-based lower-division side Youngsters. Their midfield will boast with Lionel van Schalkwyk, who formerly played for Blue Waters, while Ellington Tjirimuje, who played for Wroxhan in England last season, also joined the fold.Another striker who is likely to join the side is Geoffrey Roman, who has spent more than three seasons at German lower-division side Dattenfield.Roman played for African Stars before he went to Germany and his experience upfront will be valuable to Civics, especially if he combines well with William Chilufya, who has been a headache for defenders in recent seasons.Civics also signed Bradley Gowaseb and Nigel van Wyk, two defenders from Kingston United, while former African Stars goalkeeper Sitali Mulife has already done duty for his new team.The youngest player at Civics is Raymond Soreseb, who is only 16 years old.He was recruited from the Civics Youth Development Academy and was already included in the starting line-up against Orlando Pirates in the club’s second league match.Prominent players who have left Civics are defender Dixon Witbeen, who went back to his previous club Tigers, while midfielders Heinrich Isaacks and Congo Hindjou have secured contracts with foreign clubs.Isaacks now plays for Bryne in Denmark, while the former Brave Warriors midfield maestro Hindjou has secured a deal with Malaysian-based side Sabh Football Club.Oshakati City have signed four players from their feeder side KK Palace, while they also acquired Frans Melchior from Teenagers, Chepela Chepela from Touch & Go which was relegated last season, as well as Josephat Uutoni from African United, a lower-division side.They will miss their influential striker Tangeni Nhgishindimbwa, who has no club, but have their versatile playmaker Timotheus Iipinge to help them through the season.African Stars have signed seven new players, while Cymot SKW are fourth in line with six new players joining them.Prominent newcomers to Stars are former Chief Santos defender Steven Tjeenao and former Ramblers goalkeeper Maximillian Mbaeva.Mbaeva is the youngest in the team at the age of 17, while the oldest player at the club is Erwin Njembo, who is 27 this year.Stars signed Rodney Gamiseb (Benfica), Ockert Gaeb (Kingston Utd), Collin Kaurianga (Unam), Isaac Mwinga (Invincible) and Edison Muheua from Juventus.Long-serving midfielder Charles Hindjou has left Stars for Ramblers, where he will team up with new signings such as Paulus Kamulilo, who came in from Nampol, and John Schultz, who was at Oshakati City.Ramblers have only signed three new players and off-loaded 11 players in total.Eleven Arrows and Blue Waters dispatched the biggest number of players for the new season, with the former releasing 16, while the former has 15.Arrows have only acquired three players, all from their second-string side Young Eleven, while Blue Waters only enlisted the services of four players – Harold Haimbondi from Golden Bees, Fillemon Hauwanga (Blue Birds), Charlie Aoseb (Eleven Arrows) and Martinus Kootjie (Blue Birds).Blue Waters have cleared striker Sidney Plaatjies and midfielder Wycliff Kambonde to play for South African premiership side Jomo Cosmos, while left winger Meraai Swartbooi was scooped up by Premero de Agosto from Angola.Goalkeeper Athiel Mbaha, also from Blue Waters, has now become a regular at Black Leopards, also a South African premiership
