Chief Nangolo security company fails to pay workers for two months

Ten employees of Chief Nangolo Security Services CC in the Zambezi region have stopped working due to non-payment of salaries for the past two months.

Chief Nangolo Security Company, owned by Emilia Amupala, has a contract with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare to guard their regional office.

The employees receive a monthly salary of N$3 000, but have not been paid for November and December.

One of the employees, Kamana Yetu, on Tuesday said there has been no communication regarding the non-payment of salaries from the company’s management since last month.

He added that they worked through December in the hopes of receiving both outstanding salaries on 15 December.

“However, it has not happened. We have contacted our employers personally and through our union, but no response. We decided to stop working yesterday (Monday) until we get paid.”

He said many employees have not paid rent since last month, and have been forced to borrow money for food and other necessities.

“It’s Christmas time, and we were hoping to buy things for our families to celebrate,” he said.

Namibia Public Security and Allied Workers Union regional coordinator Alex Taimo confirmed the non-payment of the security guards.

He said the union began engaging the company on 15 December, however, there has been no response.

“I even contacted the gender ministry, thinking that they didn’t pay the company. However, the gender ministry told me that they have paid them in full for October, November, and December already. They even shared the proof of payment with me.”

Taimo said he therefore does not understand why the company has failed to pay its employees, and emphasised that the workers will only return to work once they are paid.

Amupala, when contacted for comment by The Namibian, cut the call in the middle of the conversation and did not answer any of several follow-up calls.
