Micah Chase and Emma Brinkmann both won gold medals at the Africa Triathlon Youth Championships in Hurghada, Egypt today, making a unique piece of family history along the way.
Competing in the boys 14-15 category, Chase was caught up in a crash in the leading bunch, but managed to recover and transition to the running leg, where he finished strongly to finish nearly two minutes ahead of Hussein Aki of Egypt, while John Goddard of Zimbabwe came third.
In the girls race, Brinkmann had a great swim , building up a lead of more than a minute, but Malak Amr of Egypt made a strong challenge on the cycling leg before Brinkmann pulled away to win by 42 seconds.
James Langford also competed in the boys 16-17 category, coming sixth overall, nearly three minutes behind the winner Youssef Slama of Egypt.
With Chase and Brinkmann being crowned as African champions in their age groups, they now join their older siblings, Nathan and Maja in the record books for quite a unique piece of history.
At the Africa Junior Championships in El Galala, Egypt in February, Nathan Chase won the African title in the boys junior category, while Maja Brinkmann won the African title in the junior girls category. All four siblings are now African champions in the same year.
