Capricorn Group chief brand and corporate affairs officer Marlize Horn has announced the suspension of the popular Capricorn Schools Netball League for the upcoming season.

In a statement issued this week, Horn said: “This decision stems from Capricorn Group’s commitment to promoting competitive integrity and inclusivity among the country’s top schools.”

She said the league was established to create a platform for stronger competition among the best schools nationally. However, it has become evident that the current structure has inadvertently favoured schools that are able to bear the costs of travel and related expenses, even when they were sometimes not competitive.

“This has led to a disparity in participation, sidelining many talented teams that were unable to compete due to financial constraints,” she stressed.

“Capricorn Group believes that the spirit of competition should not be limited by economics, and it is imperative to reassess our approach to ensure that every school has an equal opportunity to participate in national competitions. Therefore, after careful consideration, we have decided to suspend the Capricorn Schools Netball League.”

Horn said that as part of the transition process, the Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) organised a two day workshop in January, where representatives from the regions were guided by master facilitator and national coach, Julene Meyer, to develop a more equitable framework that promotes accessibility for all schools.

“This workshop was sponsored by Capricorn Group in collaboration with the NSSU and was also attended by representatives of Netball Namibia.

“Capricorn Group is honoured to have sponsored this national league since 2019. As a group, we are very proud of our contribution to the promotion and development of women’s sport, particularly netball over many years in Namibia, by offering a platform for netball players from senior primary to secondary schools to compete for a national title,” she said.

“The Capricorn Schools Netball League has made a positive impact in promoting netball in schools, and we are proud of its legacy. We appreciate the support and enthusiasm from the netball community and look forward to exploring new ways to enhance the competitive landscape of netball across the country,” she concluded.
