Capricorn Foundation commits N$2m to address hunger

Marlize Horn

The Capricorn Foundation has given N$2 million to two projects to address hunger and malnutrition across Namibia.

According to the 2024 Global Hunger Index, Namibia suffers from a serious level of hunger, ranking 86th out of 121 countries.

A food security assessment report by the agriculture ministry in February showed that at least 1.2 million Namibians are facing hunger.

The Capricorn Foundation yesterday allocated N$600 000 to the Gondwana Meal4Two Programme, which provides nutritional meals across the country, and N$1.4 million to Genesis Namibia, which works in tackling malnutrition in the Omaheke region.

Capricorn Foundation executive officer Marlize Horn said the efforts will contribute to the governments’ call to fight poverty in Namibia.

She added that there is an urgent need for such interventions, with collaboration being key in achieving the desired goals.

“We are proud of our partnership with Genesis Namibia and Gondwana Meal4Two and believe our efforts will collectively contribute to the government’s call to fight poverty in Namibia,” said Horn.

The Meal4Two Programme is set to deliver 400 000 meals to 30 organisations, reaching nearly 8 000 of Namibia’s most vulnerable individuals, including those in orphanages, kindergartens, school hostels, and nursing homes.

Previous support from the foundation included establishing sustainable gardens at beneficiary organisations, promoting long-term food security.

Gondwana environmental and social impact manager Quintin Hartung said the programme has been able to provide 1.6 million meals since 2017.

“This partnership is a shining example of what’s possible when we unite for lasting impact. Together, we’ve now served over 1.6 million meals since 2017,” said Hartung.

Meanwhile, Genesis Namibia, which was launched in November 2024 to combat malnutrition in the Omaheke region, has been able to provide food to 700 children and several adults, providing 67 000 meals across eight soup kitchens at Gobabis, Otjinene, Drimiopsis, Witvlei, Donkerbos, and Epukiro.

Initially, Capricorn Foundation committed N$565 500 for the six-month pilot, from December 2024 to May 2025, to support 500 children.

However, after the success of the pilot project, Capricorn Foundation has now committed an additional N$849 540 to Genesis Namibia, bringing their total pledge to N$1.4 million.

This new pledge aims to target 1 000 malnourished children in the Omaheke region.
