CONFEDERATION of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe said CAF is delighted with the re-election of Gianni Infantino as Fifa president.

Infantino was re-elected for four more years, after running unopposed at the congress of world football’s ruling body at the gathering in Kigali, Rwanda, on Thursday.

Motsepe is confident that football in Africa and globally will continue to develop and grow, with the 52-year-old Swiss-Italian lawyer at the helm of Fifa.

“Infantino and Fifa have been committed and dependable partners in developing, uplifting and promoting African football,” said Motsepe.

“CAF is delighted and welcomes the re-election of Infantino as Fifa president and is confident that football in Africa and globally will continue to develop and grow and be a force for good, under his leadership.” The re-election of Infantino in Rwanda marked the first elective congress in the history of Fifa to take place in Africa.

“CAF is committed to developing and promoting football for boys and girls, as well as amateur and professional football on the African continent,” Motsepe said.

“The construction and upgrading of football infrastructure and facilities and improving the standard and quality of football in Africa is essential for African football to become globally competitive and self-sustaining,” the CAF head said.

It is officially Infantino’s first re-election since he initially took over the remaining term of his suspended predecessor, Joseph Blatter, in 2016. This means he can seek another term in 2027 until 2031, according to Fifa statutes. – Adapted from cafonline.com
