THE Brave Gladiators crashed out of the 2012 African Women Championships qualifiers when they lost 5-2 to Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
The result translated into a 7-2 aggregate victory for the east Africans, following their 2-0 first leg triumph in Windhoek over a fortnight ago.In a game with an estimated attendance of about 15 000 people and under very hot conditions, the Gladiators nonetheless gave a good account of themselves, managing to get on the scoresheet twice through strikes from Emmerencia Fredericks and Juliana Skrywer.Tanzania scored first in the 21st minute through Mwanahamisi Omari – whose powerful shot gave no chance to Namibian goalie Sussana Eises. However Namibia responded nine minutes later through Fredericks who fired home from a Lydia Eixas corner kick.Asha Rashid restored Tanzania’s lead in the 47 minute with another drilled effort, but again Namibia pegged them back 72nd minute courtesy of striker Juliana Skrywer, who capitalised on hesitant goalkeeping by the hosts.Any hopes the Brave Gladiators harboured of snatching the tie were dashed in the final six minutes by the dominant Tanzanians, who scored three more goals. The scorers were Eto Mlenzi in the 84th minute, Rashid (88th) and Omari (90).Namibia’s attention now turns to the national under-17 and under 20 sides, who face testing away World Cup qualifying ties against South Africa on February 4 and Ghana on February 18 respectively.
