Boxers market Namibia: Shifeta

Boxers market Namibia: Shifeta

DEPUTY Minister of Sport Pohamba Shifeta yesterday said Namibian boxers have put the country on the world map through excellent performances in the amateur and professional ranks.

He said Namibia is doing substantially well as far as boxing is concerned in Africa and beyond. “Through you, a vastly populated area in the south-west of Africa has become known to many in the world,” he said at the launch of a new boxing promotion body called Kinda Promotions.Pohamba urged boxers to continue with their success, but reminded them to be disciplined in their careers.”For personal achievement and lifelong success, one has to embrace discipline,” he said, while urging boxing promoters and administrators to instil discipline in the sport. He said rules should be respected and squabbles and infighting should be avoided at all costs. He added that accountability, responsibility and transparency should rule the administration of sport at all levels.”Whatever we do, should be done fairly, reasonably and diligently,” he said.Pohamba added that sponsors would be willing to pump money into a sport with disciplined athletes that is run professionally.”Sponsors want to associate themselves with positivity, not negativity, and if we want to attract them as partners, let us stop washing our dirty linen in public,” he said.He added that the challenge for the new promoters is to win sponsorship and ensure as many fights as possible in the country. At the same occasion, the Chief Administrator of the Namibia Sport Commission, Rusten Mogane, said boxing was doing much better than football in Namibia. He expressed satisfaction with the results of boxers at various international competitions, urging them to keep up the good standard. The founder of Kinda Promotions, Kinda Nangolo, said the aim of his body is to develop boxing in the country. He said they want to work closely with the existing promoters, but at the same time urged the corporate world to come on board and assist in the development of the sport. He announced that the first fight to be promoted by his organisation will feature Namibian welterweight champion Tyson Ushona and a still to be named South African opponent. He said the fight will be on August 2 in Windhoek.Kinda Promotions got its licence from the Namibia Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (NBWCB) last year in August. They will be the second body to promote boxing after the Nestor Sunshine Tobias Boxing and Fitness Academy. The chairman of the NBWCB and president of the Namibia Boxing Federation, Kelly Nghixulifwa, said Kinda Promotions has met all the requirements to start operations and will mainly be responsible for promoting fights in the country.”Through you, a vastly populated area in the south-west of Africa has become known to many in the world,” he said at the launch of a new boxing promotion body called Kinda Promotions.Pohamba urged boxers to continue with their success, but reminded them to be disciplined in their careers.”For personal achievement and lifelong success, one has to embrace discipline,” he said, while urging boxing promoters and administrators to instil discipline in the sport. The chairman of the NBWCB and president of the Namibia Boxing Federation, Kelly Nghixulifwa, said Kinda Promotions has met all the requirements to start operations and will mainly be responsible for promoting fights in the country.
