Bonifatius wins Namibian Open

Stefanus Bonifatius of Rossmund Golf Club in Swakopmund won the Bank Windhoek Namibian Amateur Golf Open Tournament on Sunday.

Namibia’s most prestigious golf event took place at the Windhoek Golf and Country Club (WGCC) on Saturday and Sunday.

It attracted a total of 63 players from Gobabis, Mariental, Omeya, Tsumeb, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Windhoek, competing over 54 holes in A, B and C divisions.

Due to the recent rains, the course played long and soft, with the tall rough presenting a serious challenge to most of the players in the field.

After 36 holes played on the first day, Bonifatius was leading on even-par 142, with defending champion McPaul Ndeilenga four shots back on 146.

Hafeni Nghinamwaami and Likius Nande lurked another shot further back on 147.

Although fortunes fluctuated throughout the round on Sunday, the top players all held their nerve, and in the end resulted in a 5-shot victory for Stefanus Bonifatius, the new Namibian Open Champion.

At the prize-giving ceremony, Marco Swarts, NAGU president once again urged players to remain focused, especially the national team which departed for Uganda on Monday, 13 April.

Corneels Jafta, Club Captain of WGCC, thanked Bank Windhoek for their long-standing commitment to the tournament.

He also congratulated the players on their disciplined behaviour and dedication to the game.
