Blue Waters blasts City

BLUE Waters coach Lucky Shipanga says he has a lot of confidence in his players, but advised them to keep their heads down, after they blasted Oshakati City 4-0 in their opening MTC Namibia Premier League match at the Embandu Stadium near Oshakati on Saturday.

Blue Waters gained entry to top-flight football this season and sent an early warning to any side that underestimates their abilities at this level of the game.’I believe in them and they surely have a great spirit which I think will carry us through nicely this season. Our aim is to remain in the premiership. From there on, we will see how many times we can win the league title,’ he said. Blue Waters are at the top of the log with three points, while in Black Africa is in second with their 3-1 trashing of fellow Windhoekers Civics at the Sam Nujoma on Saturday night. In other matches, African Stars huffed to a 1-0 win over rookies United Stars at the Oscar Norich Stadium in Tsumeb, with Ninja Karongee on target for the Samba Boys. United Stars were also promoted this season.Ramblers and Hotspurs played to a 1-all draw at the Ramblers Stadium, while Eleven Arrows were also held to a 1-all draw by Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) at Swakopmund’s SFC Stadium. On Friday night, Tigers fought their way back into the game to emerge on equal terms with Orlando Pirates in another 1-all draw.GREAT STARTFor Shipanga and his relatively inexperienced side, it was a marvellous start in the championship that will prove too difficult to remain consistent in future matches. But he was not bothered by that, saying that they will strive for consistency and that the win against City has given them enough confidence to go for good results. ‘We want to remain consistent in all our performances. At this stage, we still have a lot to do on the tactical and technical abilities of the players, but as time goes by, I believe that things will fall into place,’ he said.Former Blue Waters central defender Hanga Muatunga was ecstatic about the win, saying that the young side had a good game and he thinks that they can still improve in future.’I think there is still a lot to be done, but for Saturday’s game, it was a surprise for me to see that these young men remained focused and took their chances which came their way. That is a positive sign and I just hope they will play with that same confidence in what will be a tough season for them,’ he said.Goals by Harold Gariseb and Tommy Mvula gave the coastal side a 2-0 lead before the break, while David Joseph scored twice to seal victory in the second stanza.corry@namibian.com.na
