BLACK Africa and Eleven Arrows advanced to the semifinals of the FNB Cup after beating Mighty Gunners and Friends respectively at the Kuisebmond stadium on October 21.
Black Africa avenged their MTC NFA Cup defeat of last season, with a comprehensive 3-1 victory against 10-man Gunners. Black Africa’s Gelasius Kandjimi scored the opener for the Lively Lions in the 21st minute with a powerful shot that went through the goalie’s legs.But Gunners soon equalised when defender Michael Smith capitalised on Bongile Grootboom’s mistake to easily put the ball into the net.Black Africa increased their lead through Bryan Bantam, who headed in a Duncan Subeb corner in the 42nd minute, while Donovan Swartz scored the last goal in the 63rd minute with a close tap in.Any hopes of a Gunners fightback vanished when star player Lindon Aseb was sent off in the 85th minute for a flying tackle on Moses Katjiteo.Arrows demolish Friends In the other quarterfinal on Sunday, Eleven Arrows capitalised on their home crowd advantage to beat Friends 6-0.Charlie Aoseb was impressive for Arrows and scored two spectacular goals.Defender Chris Katjiukua opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when he headed in a Timonteus Iipinge corner.Five minutes later Aoseb scored with a powerful low flying shot, while he added his second after a fine solo run inside Friends’ box shortly before halftime.Friends withstood Arrows’ pressure until the last seven minutes when Arrows launched a goal avalanche with three quick goals.Aoseb made another fantastic run on the flank before passing to Drikies Veringa, who made it 4-0.Arrows’ Iipinge scored the fifth after receiving a good pass from Tobias Mekondjo, while Veringa sealed the victory with a fine solo goal.Gunners stun Civics On Saturday, Mighty Gunners caused the first major upset of the competition when they beat Civics 3-2 on penalties.Civics streaked into a 3-0 lead at halftime through two goals by captain William Chilufya and one by Bradley Wermann and seemed to be on their way to a comfortable victory when Gunners staged a remarkable comeback.Gunners came back strongly with former Blue Waters winger David Anton playing a vital role upfront.Anton’s 63rd minute strike was well saved by Denzyl Bruwer.But the turning point of the match came in the 73rd minute, after Civics’ Geoffrey Roman was shown a red card by referee Reinhold Shikongo for using foul language.Gunners capitalised on that red card advantage and committed numbers upfront to earn themselves a penalty after Lindon Aseb was brought down by Donnelly Nel in the box.Robert Nanuseb stepped up to slot the ball passed Bruwer.Four minutes later a Bruwer blunder resulted in Gunners’ second goal.Bruwer failed to clear a back pass from Nel under pressure from Anton, who stabbed the ball into an empty net.Spurred on by the capacity crowd at the stadium, Gunners exerted constant pressure on Civics’ defence and finally equalised through Sagues Narimab after a silky exchange of passes with Aseb to the delight of the crowd.In the penalty shootout, Gunners’ substitute goalkeeper Erastus Haipinge became an instant hero when he saved Wermann’s spot kick and converted the decisive kick to book Gunners’ place in the semi-final the next day.Ba beat Bees In the second Group A match, Black Africa beat Golden Bees 2-0.Black Africa midfielder Donovan Swartz pounced on to a loose ball from a goalmouth scramble to fire home the first goal of the match shortly before halftime, while substitute Tjono Jagger sealed the victory with a well-taken goal from the edge of the box in injury time.The third match of the day saw Friends triumph 3-0 over their fellow Southern Stream First Division outfit Hotspurs in a dull match.Friends’ captain Desmond Snyders scored two fine solo goals, while Samuel Goagoseb scored their third after he capitalised on a mistake by Hotspurs’ keeper.In the last encounter of Saturday, Eleven Arrows came from a goal down to beat Chief Santos 2-1.Santos scored in the 8th minute through Fritz Oxhurub from a fine build up involving his fellow players.But Arrows equalised in the 32nd minute through Mervin Katjiveri after a receiving a fine pass from Robson Haitamba.Arrows, who were playing in front of
