Fashion designer and Charity Fashion owner Beverly Kaposiao has been nominated in the Ghana Outstanding Women Awards (GOWAs) – a humanitarian initiative which recognises, honours and awards women in Ghana and across Africa.
Nominees are devoted to the welfare of humanity and also contribute to society through charity and socio-economic development projects. Kaposiao celebrated her nomination on 1 November at Pepata Restaurant in Windhoek with some close friends and industry insiders.
The designer left the country on Wednesday to attend the event, slated to take place in Accra at the National Theatre today. This year’s event will be held under the theme ‘Impacting Lives Through Giving’, and will see women being honoured in 20 categories, including outstanding woman of the year, outstanding woman DJ and outstanding woman in health.
The 37-year-old’s work in her community earned her the nod. Having started Charity Fashion 12 years ago, Kapasiao does garment design and manufacturing and hosts fashion shows and pageants which raise money for orphanages. Charity Fashion also trains interested designers and makes school uniforms and clothing for vocational training students.
Kaposiao personally funded her trip. She believes that sometimes it means more to do something by yourself.
“Don’t always expect a handout. Sometimes you can do it all on your own.”
She said besides her nomination, she is thrilled to be able to mingle and make new contacts. She also believes it is time to improve the sourcing of materials.
“The economy has gone down. I can’t just sit and wait for things to get worse. South Africa is our main source of materials. Many factories are closing down, so it is time for us to look for other suppliers. We also need to look out for better quality fabrics and perhaps cheaper prices. I am willing to learn how other African countries make their material and share the information with others. One step forward is what we need,” she says.
