Embodying the essence of a creative, photographer and co-founder of The Photo Booth Shikwambi Paulus – dubbed Augusto on the Twitter streets – has been making waves on the entertainment scene with his stunning photographs. From capturing live shows to portraits of Namibian celebrities, he serves as an eye into Namibia’s entertainment scene.
In an interview with The Weekender, the self-taught photographer shared that he fell in love with the art form when he was still in high school but it wasn’t until he got to university that he decided to take his hobby seriously.
“I started doing iPhone photography and would share the photos on social media and the response was always positive. My friends started urging me to take it seriously. That push and vote of confidence brought me to where I am today.”
On photography being his preferred creative outlet, Augusto mentioned that it is easier for him to bring concepts to life through photography.
He names MTC’s 081Every1Fest as one of the best events he has had the privilege of documenting.
“Initially I went to shoot the Afroberries, but since that gave me access to the event, I ended up taking photos of all performing artists on the line-up and some of the artists ended up using my work on their personal pages.
“I established working relationships with some of these artists.”
“Prior to that event, I never shot so many people in one go. It made me realise how good I am at event photography. It was the beginning of my journey as an entertainment photographer.”
Lately he has been working closely with Namibian superstar Gazza. “It was through the 081Every1Fest. He liked the photos I took of him from that night. He then asked me to be the photographer for his ‘Misunderstood’ activations and album launch. I am not his personal photographer but I would like to believe I am his preferred photographer,” said Augusto.
He explained that he prefers shooting at events rather than in a studio because of the freedom that comes with shooting outdoors. “A studio is very limiting, that is why I prefer shooting at events. Shooting at concerts also gives me a certain adrenalin that keeps me going.”
He aspires to tour the country portraying a different perspective, one people hardly see. “It is always about the desert meeting the ocean and Ovahimba women. I want to visit all the 14 regions and show other beautiful parts of our country.”
Zulu Boy AmaDazFloor, who works closely with Augusto, commended the artist’s work. “Every opportunity he gets, he makes sure he uses it. There is only one word to describe his photos – amazing. His snapshots and editing keep a moment from running away,” he said.
