Performance art in Namibia is an art form that not many Namibians fully grasp, mainly because of limited cultural and art education institutions.
But there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for aspiring actors, directors and performance artists, who have no experience or those who have all the experience in the world.
Co-founding designer and facilitator at Born A Star Academy (Basa) Veronique Kuchekana-Chirau says the cultivation of critical and creative thinking skills in both adults and children is very important in being a creative.
“Through the drama lessons we offer, we enhance critical and creative thinking skills, allowing both adults and children to build emotional intelligence and confidence to formulate and express opinions. This will make navigating through pressure and social ills easier for living in a changing world,” she said.
The training that Basa offers is divided into three phases.
The beginner phase includes drama, building confidence, developing language and communication skills, as well as assisting with physical and emotional development to enhance imagination and cultivate teamwork.
The intermediate phase is for people who have previous training in drama and are well versed with the seven pillars of acting.
The advanced phase is for people who have studied drama and would like to sharpen their skills.
“Through joining our academy, our students will be able to do performances, go on drama camps, work in community and applied theatre, as well as attending ensemble music workshops, game design workshops and competitions. But most importantly, they will have internships and volunteer work opportunities,” she added.
