South Africa beat Namibia 2-1 in a friendly international women’s soccer match at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Goals by Leandra Smeda and Disebo Mametja put Banyana 2-0 ahead before Thomalina Adams pulled a late goal back for Namibia.
The match served as preparation for the 2014 TN Mobile African Women’s Championships that Namibia will host in October.
South Africa had most of the possession throughout the match, with Mametja and Nothando Vilakazi putting in some good crosses from the wings.
They finally broke the deadlock on 28 minutes when captain Janine van Wyk put Portia Modise clear from a freekick and Smeda volleyed her cross into the net from close range at the far post.
Janine van Wyk blasted over from a corner, while Rafiloe Jane headed narrowly wide from a Mametja cross just before half time.
Smeda and Jane continued to pressurise Namibia’s defence in the second half, but good defence by Lena Noreses and Mammie Kasaona kept them at bay.
Mametja made it 2-0 on 70 minutes when the ball went loose from a corner by Mamello Makhabane and Mametja pounced to slam it into the net.
Banyana substitute Silindile Ngubane shot narrowly over the bar on 77 minutes, but Namibia finally opened their account with a fine goal by Adams on 84 minutes, when she ran onto a great through ball by Zenatha Coleman to shoot the ball past SA’s outrushing keeper Thoko Mndaweni into an empty net.
