Athletics Grand Prix starts in Oshakati

OVER 200 athletes registered to take part in the first leg of the prestigious Bank Windhoek Grand Prix Series scheduled to take place at the Oshakati Stadium tomorrow.

This shows a healthy 25 per cent increase in participation of the same leg held in the 2011/2012 season, according to Athletics Namibia. In addition, the competition marks the start of the track and field season for athletics and will have a total of just over N$45 000 in prize money. The Oshakati leg of the Grand Prix is the first of three, which will have Namibia’s athletes vying for top honours in the lucrative competition. The second leg of the Grand Prix will take place in Windhoek on January 21, 2013, whilst the final leg takes place on February 2, 2013 in Swakopmund.Elite athletes such as Namibia Sports Woman of the Year Helalia Johannes, Beata Naigambo, and Reinhold Iita will use the competition to kick start their training programme ahead of competitions on the national and international circuit. Globine Mayova, who is this year’s Most Improved Sportsperson, has also signed up for the 200m and 400m races, whilst reigning Athletics Namibia national champions Daniel Nghipandulwa and Hitjivirue Kaanjuka booked their spots in the 800m and 100m events respectively.The Oshakati Grand Prix will be held between 09h00 and 14h00 and it is expected that sport enthusiasts will turn up in numbers to support the athletes. Entrance is free.
