Singer and medical doctor Elizabeth John, better known as Asham, recently released a five-track EP titled ‘Bloom’.
Describing the inspiration behind the title of the project, Asham says the name ‘Bloom’ symbolises spring and is a reflection of the past year.
“It’s a season I feel I’m in as I step into the limelight. It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve learnt so much over the years and it’s time to show the fruits of my labour and my love for music. It’s still inspired by the four seasons” she says.
The EP features her brother, Kushim, who recorded, mixed and mastered the music while the beats were produced by Slage Pro.
Reflecting on the experience working on the EP, the artist says it was nothing short of exciting.
“Every session was unique but filled with positive energy. Working with the main beat producer is always professional. Over the past three years, he has helped me with a few singles I previously released and it was a pleasure working with him again.
“Ultimately, I wrote these songs as a testament to how God has carried me through each season, both the good and the bad, with hope in him always anchoring me through it all,” she adds.
On how she came about the title of the EP, she says initially, the title was supposed to be ‘Seasons’, but felt the name was too plain.
“After reflecting on my year, I realised that while I may be new on the scene, my growth as a singer is undeniable throughout the years. Every phase shaped me into who I am today. I eventually landed on ‘Bloom,” she says.
The EP consists of five songs, with the first four tracks representing the seasons, starting with summer and ending with spring.
Asked about what her favorite track is, Asham says the last song on the project is special as it features her brother.
“My current favourite song is ‘Healing’, representing winter – a time to retreat and reflect. It was written three years ago during a period when I had to really learn to lean on God and realised that it’s okay to ask for help when facing difficult situations.”
She adds that it is important to not pretend to be okay.
“It was inspired by the verse, ‘Cast your burden on the Lord [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken (slip, fall, fail).”
“Healing is an ongoing journey that requires active work and I love how the Afrobeat sound of the song gives it an optimistic vibe while delivering a deep and powerful message. This track is also my first time mixing my singing style with Afrobeat, touching on my Nigerian roots and I’m excited to share this fusion with my audience,” she says.
Apart from releasing the EP, Asham recently achieved a key milestone by winning the 2024 French International Online Singing Competition and performing in Belgium.
The EP features songs such as ‘Follow’, ‘Fall’, ‘Healing’, ‘Bloom’ and ‘Gratitude’, featuring Kushim.
Asham concludes by saying: “I hope to reach people from all walks of life with my music. Words are powerful and I pray that my songs will leave a positive impact on listeners, instilling hope, joy and faith in God. Additionally, I hope to grow my fan base, not just locally but internationally.”
