Animal charity appeals for help

THE Cat Protection Society (CPS) received a call for help on Sunday afternoon. They arrived at a house in Windhoek and found 25 kittens, 10 adult cats and numerous birds, chickens, tortoises, dogs and other animals running around and breeding out of control.

The woman who called for help hoards animals and although they received food, water and shelter, they were neglected and sick. All the kittens, which are between six and eight weeks old, have been examined by Dr Minty Soni of the Rhino Park Veterinary Clinic and besides having eye infections and being a bit malnourished, they are all doing well. CPS volunteers are currently fostering the kittens and treating them for their eye infections until they are healthy and can be re-homed.The help of the SPCA was called in with the adult cats. They will be sterilised and some will be returned to the owner, but the sick ones will be put down. The CPS was already looking after several kittens waiting for adoption and this sudden influx of kittens has placed a heavy burden on all volunteers. The CPS does not have its own premises yet and all cats and kittens that it rescues are looked after in the homes of its members. People wanting to help out with food donations or who would like to adopt a kitten can phone Gia Simoes at 081 140 4546.
