THE Namibian has appointed Tangeni Amupadhi as its editor-designate for a period of six months pending confirmation.
If confirmed, Amupadhi will replace founding and long-serving editor Gwen Lister, who has been in the position for just over 25 years.Amupadhi, who is a seasoned journalist and currently editor of the monthly Insight magazine, will join The Namibian mid-April. Amupadhi will relinquish his editorship at Insight and also to substantially reduce his shareholding in the magazine company that he founded with several people in 2004.Lister will work closely with Amupadhi for a period of six months, after which she will move into a ‘strategic role as managing editor to ensure continuity and the realisation of projects envisaged by the Trust [holding company] as well as expansion plans of The Free Press of Namibia (Pty) Ltd [operating company]’, a statement issued by The Namibian said.Lister said she believes ‘the appointment will further cement The Namibian’s commitment to independent and fearless journalism and enhance the depth and quality and diversity of news and information that has made The Namibian the biggest-selling newspaper in the country.’
