This weekend, TopRevs was part of a select group of Autohaus Windhoek guests who experienced the Amarok at the Klein Aub Rush 4×4 off-road facilities on the outskirts of Windhoek.
For any untrained off-roader, the course can be intimidating.
Here, the Amarok showcased its skills and abilities, all while offering extreme luxury. The long-held myth that luxury vehicles are not true off-roaders was quickly dispelled.
The model tested was the PanAmericana, fitted with a powerful V6 TDi 10-speed automatic transmission.
Delivering 184kW and 600Nm of torque, it offers driving pleasure through the four-motion all-wheel drive system.
Over several days, TopRevs put it through its paces on city streets, open roads and the rugged terrain of the Khomas Hochland – the ultimate challenge for sceptics.
The second-generation Amarok is a clear step up from the model first introduced locally in 2010.
Its refreshed, modern design gives it a sharper edge. Available in single and double-cab versions with rear-wheel drive or four motion, the range is powered by various turbocharged diesel engines.
At first glance, the PanAmericana looks like a city car.
But it is equipped with advanced off-road technology, including selectable driving modes such as two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, and high and low range.
A diff-lock further strengthens its ‘all-terrain’ credentials.
Inside, the Amarok impresses with a colour touchscreen infotainment system, displaying data such as outside temperature, speed, driving hours, fuel consumption and navigation. Despite its size, combined fuel use is listed at 8.9 to 9.8l/100km.
Hill descent control comes standard, maintaining safe speeds on steep or slippery declines by automatically applying brakes to each wheel.
With 235mm ground clearance, 18-inch alloy wheels and all-terrain tyres, the Amarok handles obstacles confidently.
Its approach, departure and ramp angles – 30°, 26° and 21°, respectively – further boost driver assurance.
With a braked towing capacity of 3 500kg, it is well suited for off-road caravans and heavy trailers.
The load box, fitted with tie-down hooks, LED lighting, a 12V socket and enough space for a pallet, adds to its practicality.
And the verdict?
The Amarok PanAmericana is worth every cent. From keyless entry and a premium sound system to a 360° camera, airbags and gravel-road comfort, it blends robust power with refined style.
