THE Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the All Africa Games (AAG) on Wednesday announced the team to represent Namibia at the Games that will be held in Maputo, Mozambique from September 3 to 18.
A total of 38 athletes will represent Namibia in eight sport codes and they will be accompanied by 14 coaches or officials.’A total of 22 codes will be part of this year’s programme and we have decided to take part in eight codes. Team Namibia was given a quota of 200 athletes, but according to our criteria we will only be taking 38 athletes,’ the Chef de Mission of the Namibian team, Ndeulipula Hamutumwa, said at a press briefing on Wednesday.The eight codes that will represent Namibia are athletics, boxing, swimming, chess, cycling, triathlon, Paralympics and karate.The chairperson of the LOC, Shivute Katamba said that the LOC was set up by government to engage the sport codes with regard to the selection criteria, team and logistics preparation.’The preparation is in full swing and it is progressing very well. The LOC has already received the preparation schedules of all the codes,’ Katamba said.The committee is made up of Katamba, Hamutumwa, Talitha Jario (general team manager), Irwin Ndjavera (financial manager), Donatha Ngunovandu (sport medic) and Cecilia Mokhatu (team secretary).The athletics team includes Tjipekapora Herunga who was Namibia’s only gold medallist at the recently held Southern African Championships in Mozambique.Also included in the athletics team are Charlene Engelbrecht, Globine Mayova, Helalia Johannes, Dantago Gurirab, Hitjevirue Kaanjuka, Kristof Shaanika, Daniel Nghipandulwa and Reinhold Iita. Alna Similo will be the team manager while Letu Hamhola will be the coach.Boxing: Japhet Uutoni, Simon Johannes, Titus Iyambo, Mejandje Kasuto, Elias Nashivela, and Tobias Munihango. The officials will be Nicanor Natangwe (team manager), Siegfried Kaperu (coach) and Mike Serafe (coach).Chess: Charles Eichab, Simon Shidolo, Frans Dennis and Otto Nakapunda as a player/coach.Cycling: Dan Craven and Loto Petrus. Mannie Heymans will be the official travelling with the team.Karate: Ace Mutelo, Yotham Simasiku, Ishmael Mukando, Rowan Carstens, Zaid Elly and Moolman de Wet. They will travel with Leonard Martina and Freddy Mwiya as the head coach and team manager respectively.Triathlon: Abraham Louw and Lorraine Stofberg as coach. Paralympics: Aloisius Amutenya, Arma Ekandjo, Ananias Shikongo, Simson Kariseb, Johanna Benson, Louise Sagaria and Elias Ndimulunde. Even Tjiviju and Zikizee Mtenge will act as guides while Hendrick van der Westhuizen and Anna Ipinge will be the officials.Swimming: Quinton Delie and Daniela Lindermeier.
