Africa Youth Archery Champs start

AFRICA’s top youth archers started competing on Monday at the Bank Windhoek African Youth Archery Championships at the DTS sports grounds in Windhoek.

Seven African countries are fighting for the African title as well as for qualification for the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games.

Although the championships include both recurve and compound categories, only the recurve category is an Olympic discipline. The top two countries in this discipline at the competition this week will each qualify one archer for Nanjing.

During the opening ceremony, Reverend Hausiku, special advisor to the Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Jerry Ekandjo, welcomed the participating countries – Egypt, Libya, the Central African Republic, Chad, Guinea, Benin and Namibia.

He further highlighted the great set of values of focus, concentration, discipline, tradition, elegance, precision, strength and respect, which the sport of archery promotes and which are critical for success in the sport. The president of the Federation of African Archery, Dr Aladnin Gabr also attended the ceremony.

The Namibian national team is confident of achieving podium positions in all categories of the championships.

“The exceptional results and new records which the Namibian archers achieved earlier this month at the South African Championships, have boosted the team’s confidence levels,” national team coach, Marja Woortmann, commented.

Spectators are welcome throughout the course of the competition at DTS sports grounds in Sean McBride street in Windhoek. The competition starts at 09h00 each day.
