SOUTH African rapper AB Crazy has had a hand in some of the biggest cross-country collaborations in Africa. The rapper, writer, composer and producer will join Gazza at The Spot for DJ Pex Africah’s birthday party tour on Saturday, 2 March.
Ahead of his performance on Saturday, had the opportunity to chat to the rapper about how collaborations unite artists and strengthen their brands.
“I always feel welcomed in any country I visit when I’ve worked with their own. I feel like they love me the same. To collaborate is to grow,” said AB Crazy.
Speaking on his working relationship with Gazza, he said the two were introduced by DJ Pex Africah. “I featured on a song called ‘Hlasela’ and got the opportunity to perform with Gazza in Namibia, which led to me knowing him personally as a friend. Gazza suggested we do another track together called ‘Champagne Lifestyle’ just before he wraps up the album,” he said.
AB Crazy, who was recently recognised by the Changamire Hip-Hop Festival Awards in Zimbabwe for best collaboration with QuaZor, revealed that he is currently working on beats he got from Namibian award winning producer, Sam-E Lee Jones.
The king of hooks said that he is certain the more he visits Namibia, the more he will meet more artists and producers to work with.
Jones describes AB Crazy as talented, skilled, someone who has a good voice and is always full of ideas. “The beats he is working on are for his project but we have more than one song. Music fans can expect something different from what he usually does,” said Jones.
Having been in the music business for a long time, AB Crazy attributes his longevity to having a unique sonic identity. “Street credibility is also very important. Collaborations keep you in the game longer as well, but most importantly, humility and a positive mindset are key,” he said.
Asked what message he has for his Namibian fans, the humble rapper thanked fans for their support and the love they show him. “Last time I visited, they welcomed me and made me feel at home. I will always be grateful for that. They are the reason I always want to visit. I appreciate and love them so much. They made me love Namibia with all my heart.”
